At a glance
A human-rights remembrance Romería will move through central Santiago on Sunday 6 September 2026, travelling from Alameda to Cementerio General via Avenida Recoleta.
The official traffic plan begins at 08:30. It includes road closures, unavailable crossings and diversions affecting Red Movilidad buses. Full traffic restoration is expected at around 15:30.
People travelling through Santiago Centro, Providencia or Recoleta should allow extra time and check live official information before leaving.
Why the Romería is taking place
Human-rights organisations describe the event as a commemoration marking 53 years since the 1973 coup. The Romería will honour memory and Salvador Allende, while participating organisations will also express their opposition to pardons.
The route connects central Santiago with Cementerio General, travelling from Alameda towards Avenida Recoleta. Traffic restrictions will change as the procession advances, so the effects will not be limited to one street or neighbourhood.
Confirmed closures from 08:30
According to Transporte Informa, the first major restriction will affect Alameda and Providencia, which will close in both directions between Almirante Latorre and Avenida Salvador.
Traffic on San Antonio will then be suspended between Ismael Valdés Vergara and Alameda as the march moves forward.
Farther north, both carriageways of Avenida Recoleta will close between Avenida Santa María and Avenida Valdivieso. Crossings through this section will also be unavailable during the restriction.
Drivers travelling south on Avenida Recoleta will be diverted west using Avenida Dorsal and Avenida México. Those who need to cross the Recoleta area are advised by the official traffic plan to prefer Costanera Norte.
Red Movilidad diversions
The closures will also change some surface bus routes. Eastbound Red Movilidad services will divert via Avenida España south, while westbound services in Providencia will use Manuel Montt.
Passengers should expect longer journeys where buses need to leave their normal routes. Stops close to the affected streets may also be less convenient to reach while crossings are unavailable, although the supplied official information does not specify individual stop changes.
Check Red Movilidad’s live channels or journey-planning tools shortly before travelling. If possible, choose a route that avoids Alameda, central Providencia and Avenida Recoleta during the affected period.
Safety and disruption outlook
Confirmed: Traffic disruption is expected from 08:30 until around 15:30, including road closures, Red Movilidad diversions and unavailable crossings on the closed section of Avenida Recoleta.
Not confirmed: Neither supplied official source forecasts violence or property damage. There is also no confirmed information in the supplied notices about Metro closures, special Metro operations, crowd size, policing arrangements or safety incidents.
Readers should therefore avoid assumptions about conditions on the day. Live circumstances and the timing of each restriction may develop as the Romería progresses. For current Metro and transport information, consult the relevant official channels before starting your journey.
