Today’s recipe keeps breakfast simple. Today’s gadget does quite the opposite. Between fluffy pancakes and a camera that might need its own seat, there is plenty of English to enjoy this Thursday.

🌍 World News in Clear English

Recent developments: the price of staying
Japan has raised its permanent residency fee twentyfold. Permanent residency means permission to live in a country long-term. The change forms part of immigration policies intended to manage Japan’s growing foreign population. Why it matters: administrative costs can affect people planning a long-term home abroad. BBC World — published October 1, 2026.
Three useful expressions:
- A fee increase — un aumento de la tarifa: “A fee increase can change someone’s budget.”
- Long-term plans — planes a largo plazo: “Our long-term plans include living abroad.”
- Twenty times as much — veinte veces más: “It now costs twenty times as much.” This describes the new total, not an extra twenty times added to it.

A Santiago conversation: what does culture bring to a city?
A study finds that the Brit Awards boosted Manchester’s economy by £5 million. Greater Manchester mayor Bev Craig described the awards’ first move north as a major moment. BBC Culture — published October 1, 2026.
Your local English activity: imagine a cultural event you would like Santiago to host. Choose a venue you know, propose a date, and explain your choice. This is an imaginary proposal, not an event announcement.
Try: “I would hold the event at ___ because ___.” Then ask: “How could nearby cafés and shops benefit?”

Technology spotlight: a phone with extra baggage
A camera attachment is extra equipment connected to a camera or phone. Huawei has made an add-on camera for its Mate 90 Pro Max. The Verge places it alongside the trend for teleconverter lenses: additional lenses that help photograph distant subjects. The Verge — published October 1, 2026.
Learner tip: practise separating a product description from a personal opinion. “It has an add-on camera” describes a feature. “It looks inconvenient” expresses your judgement. Useful technology English does not need exaggerated promises.

Recent developments: Talking Heads look back
Talking Heads reunited for a question-and-answer conversation with Este Haim to launch a SiriusXM station. David Byrne expressed pride in the band’s work while saying he tries not to dwell on the past. NME — published October 1, 2026.
Your viewing activity: use the interview coverage to practise reporting someone’s attitude. Complete: “He feels proud of ___, but he doesn’t want to ___.”
Entertainment vocabulary: reunite — reunirse de nuevo; look back — recordar el pasado; Q&A — sesión de preguntas y respuestas. A reunion for an interview is not the same thing as a concert announcement.
🍽️ British or American Recipe

American-style pancakes for a spring breakfast
An original home-kitchen recipe: no specialist equipment, no elaborate toppings, and no camera crew required.
Makes: approximately 8 small pancakes · Time: about 20 minutes
Ingredients
- 150 g plain flour
- 8 g baking powder
- 15 g sugar
- A pinch of salt
- 1 egg
- 180 ml milk
- 20 g melted butter, slightly cooled
- A little oil for the pan
- Optional: sliced banana, honey or jam
Chile-friendly shopping notes: use harina sin polvos de hornear and add the baking powder separately. Look for polvos de hornear, not bicarbonato. Ordinary milk and butter are suitable; maple syrup is optional, not essential.
Method
- Mix the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a bowl.
- In another bowl, whisk the egg, milk and melted butter.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until combined; a few small lumps are fine.
- Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium-low heat.
- Add roughly 40 ml of batter per pancake, leaving space between them.
- Cook until bubbles appear and the edges begin to set, approximately 2 minutes. Flip and cook for another 1–2 minutes, until golden and cooked through. Lower the heat if they brown too quickly.
- Serve warm with your chosen topping.
Kitchen English: batter — mezcla líquida; whisk — batir; flip — dar vuelta. Say: “Flip the pancake gently,” not “turn around the pancake.”
