Workplace Growth Daily · 2026-09-19 19 September 2026 — Workplace Growth Daily for LUMARA Illustrative scene: Mina sees an internal role that looks promising. Its description asks for “stakeholder coordination”, “commercial judgement” and “operational fluency”. She wonders whether this is a vacancy or a particularly stern crossword. Her manager wants to help, but “keep developing” is not a development plan. A more useful conversation would identify one target skill, create a small chance to practise it and agree what evidence would demonstrate progress. No supplied source was published in the last seven days, so this is a research-backed practical briefing, not breaking news. The findings below come from Gallup’s US workforce research and CIPD guidance; apply them thoughtfully to LUMARA’s locations and context. What is changing 1. Development remains a visible weakness. Gallup reported that fewer than half of US employees participate in job-related training. It also said 59% of CHROs identified development as an employee-experience element their organisation struggled with in 2025, 16 percentage points more than the previous year (Gallup, 26 March 2026). For a real team, development should not depend solely on formal courses: coached assignments and practice opportunities can make learning part of work. 2. Skills decisions often lack usable data. CIPD reported from 2024 survey data that 38% of organisations collected data to identify internal skills gaps, while 31% used data to inform future skill requirements (CIPD, 21 July 2026). The practical implication is to record capabilities, not just job titles. A colleague’s presentation, analysis or customer-recovery skills may be transferable to another team. 3. Clarity and coaching matter. In Gallup’s US data, 49% of employees strongly agreed that they knew what was expected at work in the first half of 2026, up from 47% in 2025. Gallup also found that manager support was strongly associated with engagement during technology-related change, while cautioning that its productivity measures relied heavily on self-reports (Gallup, 21 July 2026). For teams, the wider lesson is practical: explain the expected outcome, coach the attempt and inspect evidence rather than assuming that access to a tool or opportunity creates development. LUMARA’s practical suggestion: connect each internal opportunity to a short list of observable skills, then offer a small practice route before expecting a polished application. Build a skill in 10 minutes This is the ability to turn “I want to progress” into a specific capability, a practice opportunity and evidence that others can assess fairly. The 10-minute exercise: Skill–Proof–Step Choose one internal role, project or responsibility you may want within the next year. - Minutes 1–3 — Skill: Write one capability it requires. Avoid personality labels such as “leadership presence”. Prefer an observable behaviour: “summarises customer evidence and recommends a priority”. - Minutes 4–6 — Proof: Note one real example that shows your current level. Use: situation, action, result. Do not inflate the result. - Minutes 7–8 — Gap: Complete: “To be ready for a larger assignment, I need to practise…” - Minutes 9–10 — Step: Propose a small task you could complete in seven days, plus the feedback you need. Visible success criteria: the page names one observable skill, includes one truthful example, identifies one gap and proposes one manageable practice task with an owner, deadline and reviewer. A colleague unfamiliar with your role should understand it without translation by corporate archaeologists. Staff and management: respect in both directions Managers should provide respect, clear expectations, recognition for specific contributions and genuine listening. They should distribute stretch work using transparent criteria, check workload before adding development tasks and explain decisions about internal opportunities. Coaching must not become unpaid extra work hidden behind the word “exposure”. Manager — say this: “You said you want to build project-coordination experience. This seven-day assignment could help. Success means a clear schedule, named risks and feedback from two contributors. What should we remove or delay so the workload stays manageable? I’ll review the evidence with you on Friday, whether the result is perfect or not.” Staff can state their interests clearly, ask what readiness looks like, request feedback and disagree with evidence and respect. Raising concerns is legitimate. Nobody should be expected to tolerate bullying, retaliation or humiliation; use the appropriate reporting and support channels where conduct crosses that line. Staff member — say this: “I’m interested in the internal operations role. I understand your concern about my forecasting experience, but I see my recent scheduling work differently. Could we compare it with the role criteria and agree a small task that would show where I am? I’m also concerned that adding it without changing priorities would make my workload unmanageable.” Work better as a team Purpose: connect a real internal opportunity to fair, accessible skill-building steps. Roles: a facilitator keeps time; an opportunity owner explains the need; a scribe creates the output; every participant contributes one idea. Rotate these roles next time. 1. 0–3 minutes: Select one upcoming project, temporary responsibility or internal vacancy. The opportunity owner states the required outcome—not a preferred personality type. 2. 3–7 minutes: Individually write one observable skill needed and one small task that could demonstrate it. 3. 7–11 minutes: Group similar ideas. Remove vague labels and requirements that are not genuinely necessary. 4. 11–14 minutes: Agree one beginner practice task, one stretch task and the same assessment criteria for everyone. 5. 14–15 minutes: Name who will publish the opportunity and how colleagues can express interest. Tangible shared output: a one-page Opportunity Bridge containing the outcome, two or three observable skills, two practice tasks, assessment criteria, workload safeguards, contact person and expression-of-interest deadline. It is a development map, not a promise of appointment. Turn teamwork into measurable growth Test whether a small internal assignment can improve service quality while producing credible development evidence. - Owner: customer-support team manager. - Behaviour: one colleague seeking broader responsibility drafts a concise response guide for one recurring customer question, supported by an experienced coach. - Baseline: before starting, record the previous seven days’ number of reopened cases for that question and the median handling time. Use existing operational data only. - Test: use the draft guide on a limited set of suitable cases for seven days. The coach reviews the first two uses and gives specific feedback. - Seven-day review: compare reopened cases and median handling time with the baseline; inspect a small sample for accuracy and tone. Ask the learner what changed in their judgement and save one anonymised work example as development evidence. - Balancing measure: record the learner’s and coach’s time, overtime and postponed work. Stop or narrow the test if quality, wellbeing or workload deteriorates. This experiment may reveal useful signals; it does not guarantee better retention, productivity or career progression. Customer information must remain protected under LUMARA’s applicable rules. Try it today - [ ] Choose one internal opportunity or upcoming project. - [ ] Translate one requirement into an observable skill. - [ ] Complete the 10-minute Skill–Proof–Step exercise. - [ ] Ask a manager or colleague for one specific coaching response. - [ ] Agree what work will be paused before adding a stretch task. - [ ] Publish the opportunity and criteria where the whole eligible team can see them. - [ ] Schedule a seven-day evidence review. Discussion question: What useful internal opportunity is currently visible only to people who already know whom to ask?
