English text to practise

A British crumble takes the lead this Monday. Elsewhere: a diplomatic question, a colour with a cosmic name and an English class that moves steadily closer to the pigeons. 🌍 World News in Clear English Recent developments — published September 28, 2026. After the Trump–Xi summit in Washington, BBC World asks readers to pay attention not only to what the leaders said, but also to what they left unsaid. That matters because friendly public language does not answer every question about the relationship between the US and China. Summit means a meeting between leaders (cumbre); left unsaid means not mentioned (no dicho); read between the lines means look for an implied meaning (leer entre líneas). It is a useful reading skill—not permission to treat a guess as a fact. 🇨🇱 Chile Today For a Santiago conversation this Monday, try an international culture story without presenting it as a local event. Recent developments — published September 28, 2026: BBC Culture reports that Westminster City Council is considering “all options” for Banksy’s flag statue and says it is responsible for the statue’s safety. Ask a friend: Should a public artwork stay where it is? Why? In this context, custodian means the person or organisation responsible for caring for something (encargado de su cuidado). 🤖 Trending AI Recent developments — published September 28, 2026. A useful technology debate begins with a question: where should a data centre—a building that houses computer equipment for digital services—go? BBC World reports that Goodman Group scrapped its Project Mars data-centre plan in Sydney after push-back, citing changes to the policy and regulatory environment. That is a concrete question to bring to discussions about infrastructure for AI, without assuming this project was an AI-only facility. Learner tip: practise the careful distinction between “The company cited regulatory changes” and “Regulatory changes were the only cause.” 🎵 Music, Concerts & Streaming in Chile Recent developments — published September 28, 2026. BBC Culture reports that Taylor Swift broke the record for the most MTV Video Music Awards and won video of the year; Madonna also won and performed. For heavier listening, NME, published September 28, 2026, reports Slipknot’s 2027 stadium-tour announcement, including dates in Brazil and Argentina. Took home an award means ganó un premio; a line-up is the list of performers (cartel). For screen-related English practice, read the BBC awards story and describe the difference between a performance and a music video; neither requires a streaming subscription. 🍽️ British or American Recipe British apple crumble, for four A warm British-style bake for a Santiago spring evening. Use 4 apples (about 600 g), 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 20 g sugar for the filling. For the topping, use 120 g plain flour (harina sin polvos de hornear), 70 g cold butter (mantequilla) and 60 g sugar. Apples, flour, butter and sugar are familiar ingredients to look for in Chilean shops; a small ovenproof dish or fuente para horno will do. 1. Heat the oven to 180°C. Peel and chop the apples. Mix them with the lemon juice, cinnamon and 20 g sugar in the dish. 2. Rub the cold butter into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the remaining 60 g sugar. 3. Sprinkle the topping over the apples; do not press it down. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until golden and bubbling. Let it stand for five minutes before serving. Cooking English: rub in = incorporar frotando con los dedos; sprinkle = espolvorear; bubbling = burbujeando. 😂 English with a Sense of Humor I moved closer to the router. Then the window. Now I’m attending class from the balcony, supervised by three pigeons. 🗣️ English for Real Life 1. Read between the lines — leer entre líneas. “The statement sounds positive, but I’m trying to read between the lines.” 2. Leave something unsaid — dejar algo sin decir. “The speakers left the timetable unsaid.” 3. Consider all options — considerar todas las opciones. “Let’s consider all options before moving the artwork.” 4. Take home an award — ganar un premio. “Which artist took home the video award?” 5. Gear up for something — prepararse para algo. “I’m gearing up for my online English class.” 📚 KEY VOCABULARY | English | Spanish Translation | Example Sentence | | --- | --- | --- | | summit | cumbre | The leaders met at a summit. | | left unsaid | no dicho | Some questions were left unsaid. | | custodian | encargado de su cuidado | The council is the statue’s custodian. | | data centre | centro de datos | The proposed data centre drew criticism. | | push-back | oposición o resistencia | The plan faced push-back. | | line-up | cartel de artistas | I checked the tour line-up. | | topping | cobertura | Sprinkle the topping over the apples. | | crumbs | migas | The butter and flour formed crumbs. | | bubbling | burbujeando | The fruit is bubbling in the oven. | | router | rúter o enrutador | I moved closer to the router. | 📝 GRAMMAR FOCUS If + present simple, will + base verb expresses a possible future result.
