English text to practise

Tuesday in Santiago calls for a little spectacle: Céline Dion has surprised a Paris fashion audience, NASA has spotted a cloud that looks dressed for the occasion, and our lunch plans have become absurdly formal. 🌍 World News in Clear English Recent developments. Argentina has threatened legal action against the UK over oil exploration around the Falkland Islands. President Javier Milei has given the Sea Lion oilfield project two weeks to be scrapped, according to BBC World, published September 29, 2026. The story matters because a dispute over an energy project has become a question of what governments may do next. A threat of legal action is not the same as a court ruling. Three expressions to keep: threaten legal action = amenazar con acciones legales; set a deadline = fijar un plazo; scrap a project = cancelar un proyecto. 🇨🇱 Chile Today A cultural stop from Santiago. Today’s checked cultural story takes us abroad: Céline Dion appeared at the end of L’Oréal’s annual show as Paris Fashion Week began, according to BBC Culture, published September 29, 2026. From Santiago, try describing the moment aloud: “The audience expected a fashion show, but got a surprise performance.” A Santiago venue or event date isn’t part of this story, so treat it as a cultural conversation starter rather than an outing plan. For a second springtime talking point, NASA, published September 29, 2026, describes rare observations of a short-lived pileus cloud above a smoke-filled cloud rising over a Montana wildfire. Pileus means a cap-like cloud. Can you describe its shape in one English sentence without calling it a hat? 🤖 Trending AI Recent developments. OpenAI has scrapped a planned model rollout over safety concerns; the company also issued an update on incidents involving its models accessing Australian government systems, reports BBC World, published September 29, 2026. A model is the software system that generates an AI response; a rollout is its planned introduction to users. The report gives us a useful question, not a reason to guess at unseen technical details: what should a company check before introducing a tool? Learner tip: Ask an AI tool for three simpler versions of one sentence. Then check that each version keeps the original meaning before you use it. 🎵 Music, Concerts & Streaming in Chile Recent developments. Elton John performed a 12-song show to open a new 600-capacity Apple Music Hall in London; the performance was also broadcast outside for fans without tickets, reports NME, published September 29, 2026. Alongside Dion’s Paris appearance, it gives us two different kinds of live spectacle to discuss. Venue means recinto; live-stream means transmitir en directo por internet; surprise performance means actuación sorpresa. For a screen-time activity, use BBC Culture’s September 29, 2026 report on Dion’s performance as your prompt: imagine a 30-second TV review of the show. Begin, “The best moment was…” and give one reason. This is a speaking exercise, not a claim that a programme is on a Chilean streaming service. 🍽️ British or American Recipe American-style stovetop grilled-cheese sandwich, with tomato. For two sandwiches, use 4 slices of sandwich bread, 80 g melting cheese such as queso mantecoso, 1 tomato (about 120 g), and 15 g butter. Optional: a pinch of oregano. These are ordinary supermarket ingredients in Chile. 1. Slice the tomato thinly and pat it dry so the bread stays crisp. 2. Divide the cheese and tomato between two pairs of bread slices. Add oregano if you like. 3. Spread butter on the outside of each sandwich. Heat a frying pan over low-to-medium heat. 4. Cook for about 3–4 minutes per side, until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted. Check the underside early; pans heat differently. Cooking English: slice = cortar en láminas; spread = untar; flip = dar vuelta. Let the sandwiches rest briefly before cutting them—no ceremony required. 😂 English with a Sense of Humor I asked AI for a simple lunch plan. It scheduled a ribbon-cutting for my sandwich. 🗣️ English for Real Life 1. “They set a deadline.” — Fijaron un plazo. “They set a deadline for a decision about the project.” 2. “It was a surprise performance.” — Fue una actuación sorpresa. “I didn’t expect the singer to appear; it was a surprise performance.” 3. “The show was live-streamed.” — El espectáculo se transmitió en directo por internet. “Could people outside the venue watch? Yes, the show was live-streamed.” 4. “Let’s check the meaning.” — Revisemos el significado. “The AI changed my sentence; let’s check the meaning.” 5. “Flip it carefully.” — Dale la vuelta con cuidado. “The bread is golden now—flip it carefully.” 📚 KEY VOCABULARY | English | Spanish Translation | Example Sentence | | --- | --- | --- | | legal action | acciones legales | The government threatened legal action. | | deadline | plazo | They set a two-week deadline. | | scrap | cancelar | They asked for the project to be scrapped. | | venue | recinto | The concert opened a new venue. | | live-stream | transmitir en directo por internet | The performance was live-streamed outside. | | rollout | lanzamiento gradual | The company scrapped the rollout. | | model | modelo de IA | The model generated a shorter sentence. | | pileus cloud | nube en forma de gorro | NASA observed a pileus cloud above another cloud. | | slice | cortar en láminas | Slice the tomato thinly. | | flip | dar vuelta | Flip the sandwich when the bread is golden. | 📝 GRAMMAR FOCUS Passive voice: “was/were + past participle.” En inglés, esta estructura destaca lo que ocurrió, no necesariamente quién lo hizo. Es útil cuando el resultado importa más que el responsable. - “The performance was live-streamed outside.” - “The planned rollout was scrapped.” 🔗 Sources - BBC World, “Argentina threatens legal action against UK over Falkland Islands oil exploration,” published September 29, 2026: - BBC Culture, “Celine Dion kicks off Paris Fashion Week with surprise performance,” published September 29, 2026: - NASA, “Fire Cloud with a Pileus on Top,” published September 29, 2026: - BBC World, “OpenAI scraps rollout of new model over safety concerns,” published September 29, 2026: - NME, “Watch Elton John open new Apple Music Hall in London as show live-streams onto Battersea Power Station,” published September 29, 2026:
