Wednesday, September 30, 2026 · Santiago, Chile Today's edition moves from government matchmaking to lunar communications—with a cardigan taking an unexpectedly dramatic journey in between. Read a little, speak a little, and keep the household fan away from your photo session. 🌍 World News in Clear English Recent developments: Singapore makes an introduction Singapore has launched FirstDate, a matchmaking service for government workers. Matchmaking means helping people meet potential romantic partners. The launch comes as the country faces an ageing population and a record-low fertility rate—the average number of children born per woman. BBC World — published September 30, 2026. Why pay attention? This story connects a very personal subject—finding a partner—with a national population challenge. It also offers three useful expressions: - Launch a service — lanzar un servicio: begin offering something to users. - Wrestle with — lidiar con: struggle to deal with a difficult issue. - Record-low — mínimo histórico: lower than any previously recorded level. Conversation starter: Should governments help people meet partners, or should dating remain entirely private? 🇨🇱 Chile Today A Santiago conversation with a global destination For your English practice in Santiago, take your imagination to the Moon. NASA has opened its 2027 Human Lander Challenge, inviting college and university students to propose ideas for reliable lunar communications. The challenge concerns a central need for sustained exploration: keeping people connected. NASA — published September 29, 2026. Try this with a friend: You are in your Santiago apartment; your partner is pretending to be on the Moon. Explain a simple task without gestures. Then repeat it with a deliberate interruption. Which instructions were clear enough to survive the missing words? Useful phrase: “Could you repeat the last part?” — “¿Podrías repetir la última parte?” 🤖 Trending AI Recent developments: who pays for answers? Google is reportedly testing payments to around 100 publishers contributing to its AI search features. A pilot program is a small-scale trial; web traffic means visits to websites. The reported trial comes amid scrutiny of AI's effects on those visits. The Verge — published September 30, 2026. Learner tip: Notice reportedly, meaning según lo informado. It signals that a claim comes from reporting rather than presenting it as an unqualified fact. Practise: “The company is reportedly testing a new approach.” 🎵 Music, Concerts & Streaming in Chile Recent developments: tapes behind a legal door Oasis has taken legal action to stop the sale of unheard tapes. The auction house said the lot could no longer be sold. A lot is an item, or group of items, offered together at an auction. BBC Culture — published September 30, 2026. An artist to explore Mei Semones has announced her second album, Howl, and a North American tour. The album marks her first release under Verve/Interscope. This is an announcement—not a claim that the album arrived today. Pitchfork — published September 30, 2026. Entertainment English: A sophomore album means a second album (segundo álbum). Unheard recordings are recordings people have not heard (grabaciones no escuchadas). Your speaking prompt: Would you rather hear an artist's early recordings or a carefully finished album? Give one reason using “I'd rather…” 🍽️ British or American Recipe Today's language recipe: a British festival plan The first Glastonbury 2027 tickets are set to go on sale. The festival is scheduled for June 23–27, 2027, at Worthy Farm in Somerset. Keep the dates separate: this is today's ticket news about next year's event. BBC Culture — published September 30, 2026. For a kitchen-table English activity, combine these three ingredients: 1. A preference: “I'd like to go to a music festival.” 2. A practical question: “What dates should we keep free?” 3. A decision: “Let's check the details before making plans.” Read the exchange aloud, then change the festival to an imaginary dinner invitation. Make plans — hacer planes works in both situations. 😂 English with a Sense of Humor Instagram announced an AI creative assistant for its Edits app, using account data to suggest changes. Our fictional flatmates take the idea rather too far. The Verge — published September 30, 2026. I asked my flatmate for one outfit photo. Three suggestions later, she’s operating the wind machine. I asked my flatmate for one outfit photo. Three suggestions later, she’s operating the wind machine. An outfit is a set of clothes worn together. A flatmate shares your home; American English commonly uses roommate. An outfit is a set of clothes worn together. Your connection cut out.” 4. “I'd rather wait.” — “Preferiría esperar.” Example: “I'd rather wait until we know the dates.” 5. “Let's check before making plans.” — “Revisemos antes de hacer planes.” Example: “Let's check before making plans; I haven't booked anything.” 📚 KEY VOCABULARY | English | Spanish Translation | Example Sentence | | --- | --- | --- | | matchmaking | búsqueda de parejas | Matchmaking helps people meet potential partners. | | ageing population | población envejecida | An ageing population raises important questions. | | reliable | confiable | We need a reliable connection. | | communications | comunicaciones | Clear communications matter during a difficult task. | | pilot program | programa piloto | A pilot program tests an idea on a small scale. | | reportedly | según lo informado | The company is reportedly testing payments. | | auction | subasta | The recording was intended for an auction. | | sophomore album | segundo álbum | She announced her sophomore album. | | keep free | reservar, dejar disponible | Which dates should we keep free? | | outfit | conjunto de ropa | I chose an outfit for the photo. | 📝 GRAMMAR FOCUS “I'd rather” + base verb Explicación: Usa I'd rather + verbo en su forma base para expresar una preferencia.
