The Lumara Edit

Welcome to Sunday: a little world perspective, a little music, and a breakfast with a larger publicity budget than audience. Today’s spring edition starts with Brazil—and gives your English plenty to talk about.
🌍 World News in Clear English

Recent developments — Brazil’s close contest
Brazil’s election pits President Lula against Flávio Bolsonaro. Polls suggest a close contest between the left-wing incumbent—the person currently holding office—and his right-wing challenger. Why it matters: voters are choosing between contrasting political directions in a country in Chile’s region. A close race also makes careful language important: a poll is not a final result. BBC World — published October 4, 2026.
Three expressions to keep:
- A close contest — una contienda reñida. “It could be a close contest.”
- To run against someone — competir electoralmente contra alguien. “The challenger is running against the president.”
- Polls suggest… — las encuestas sugieren… Use this instead of presenting a prediction as certainty.
🇨🇱 Chile Today
A Sunday conversation in Santiago
Bring the regional headline to your own table with this speaking question: “What would you want to know before discussing another country’s election?” Try answering with “I would check…” and name two things. Keep the conversation about information, not assumptions.
Recent developments — a city that shapes a person
Presenter Craig Charles is marking 50 years of poetry with a tribute to Liverpool for National Poetry Day. His city-centred celebration offers a cultural starting point for your own Santiago writing exercise. BBC Culture — published October 4, 2026.
Your local activity: write three lines beginning “Santiago taught me…” Choose a street, a sound and a personal memory. Read them aloud slowly. This is a home writing invitation, not an advertised local event.
🤖 Trending AI

Recent developments — making games with AI
Capcom is preparing for game creation alongside artificial intelligence, software that performs tasks associated with human intelligence. Programmer Satoshi Ishida discussed the company’s REX Project and the future of its RE Engine at Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026. A game engine is the software framework used to build a game. This is a development direction, not proof that AI can independently produce a finished game. The Verge — published October 3, 2026.
Learner tip: practise cautious predictions: “AI could help with some tasks.” Compare that with “AI will do everything.” Could expresses possibility; will sounds much more certain.
🎵 Music, Concerts & Streaming in Chile

Recent developments — Turnstile’s television debut
Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile made its debut on an American late-night television show, performing “Birds” and a combined performance of “I Care” and “Dull.” The tracks come from its Grammy-winning album Never Enough. Hardcore is an intense style of punk music; a medley combines different songs in one performance. NME — published October 4, 2026.
Recent developments — a film to read about
Nathan Fielder and co-director Lance Oppenheim presented You Can See Everything at the New York Film Festival. The documentary follows an encounter with Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and mixes investigation with deadpan comedy: humour delivered with a serious expression. Read the review as a film discovery rather than a Chile streaming recommendation. The Guardian — published October 1, 2026.
Entertainment English: “They made their debut” means it was their first appearance in that setting. “The delivery is deadpan” describes the performer’s serious tone—not the audience’s reaction.
🍽️ British or American Recipe

An American-style grilled cheese for two
An original kitchen activity for a relaxed Sunday lunch: crisp bread, melted cheese and useful cooking verbs.
Ingredients
- 4 slices sandwich bread
- 100 g sliced cheese suitable for melting, such as mantecoso or gouda
- 20 g softened butter
- Optional: 1 tomato, sliced, served alongside
Steps
- Spread the butter thinly over one side of each bread slice.
- Put two slices in a frying pan, buttered sides down. Layer the cheese on top and cover with the remaining bread, buttered sides up.
- Cook over medium-low heat for approximately 3–4 minutes, checking underneath rather than trusting the clock alone.
- Flip carefully. Cook the other side until golden and the cheese has melted. Lower the heat if the bread browns too quickly.
- Cut and serve. The hot cheese deserves a little patience before the first bite.
Kitchen English: spread = untar; layer = disponer en capas; flip = dar vuelta; melted = derretido. Say the instructions aloud while preparing the sandwich.
😂 English with a Sense of Humor
My flatmate says his breakfast is taking over the internet. So far, the audience is me and a fly.

'Taking over' can mean becoming extremely popular or widespread.
Recent developments — the joke behind the joke
Know Your Meme traces “Sleepy Jerry” to posts claiming that an AI-generated reaction image was taking over the internet. Doubt about the claim became part of the meme itself. Our original kitchen cartoon borrows that gap between a grand announcement and a tiny audience—not the original character or image. Know Your Meme — published October 2, 2026.
